Box spring beds promise “” as if you were lying on clouds “” and an “” exclusive sleep feeling “”. With their lush cushions, they signal pure comfort. The Stiftung Warentest wanted to know whether the alleged top class of beds can keep this promise. She tested 15 box spring beds for the current issue of the magazine “” test “”.

Tones versus Tones – New invention against snoring presented

Tones against tones
New invention against snoring presented

An Israeli company recently presented a novel invention that makes it possible to reduce the volume of snoring. Video

Box spring beds make it easier to lie down and get up thanks to their height. Many consumers like that. But of the 15 models tested, which cost between 1500 and 4200 euros as double beds, none of them were all-round good, according to Stiftung Warentest. Ten showed clear weaknesses in the endurance test.

Softer than specified by the manufacturer

The best model in the test was the “” Fennobed Continental Aurea “” for 3310 euros. It received the grade “” Satisfactory “”. After the height test, it had the lowest height loss of all the test samples tested. However, the mattress was softer than declared by the manufacturer and unnecessarily contaminated with flame retardants.

Two box spring beds failed with the grade “” Poor “”: The “” Royal Spring Swedish Edition Dreamer “” bed for 2700 euros could not convince the testers in terms of durability. The mattress has two sides with different firmness. The medium-strength side deteriorates significantly in long-term use. Over time, warmth and sweat form a deep depression and the mattress becomes softer.

After unpacking the mattresses smell of smell

The “” BeCo Exquisit box spring bed Eos Comfort “” for 2000 euros was the worst bed in the test. Even after 24 hours of ventilation, the testers were still able to detect volatile organic compounds – and the associated unpleasant smells. Health impairments are usually not to be feared from these materials. Also with this model, heat and sweat create a depression. According to the verdict, the soft mattress becomes significantly harder over time.

In almost all models, the Stiftung Warentest criticized the fact that noticeable loungers can form as a result of heat and moisture. In addition, almost all tested models are so soft that sleepers sink in deeply. For seven of the 15 box spring beds, the manufacturer’s information deviates significantly from the measured hardness.

What makes a good sleeping pad?

According to test leader Hans-Peter Prix, a good mattress must not only support the body well in the supine position, but also in the side position. “” In the supine position, it adapts to the body in such a way that the natural double S shape of the spine is retained. In the lateral position, the shoulder and pelvis can sink so deep that a straight line is formed between the cervical spine and tailbone, “” says “” test “”.

According to Stiftung Warentest, a good mattress is durable, properly processed, it does not contain any harmful substances and the cover can be washed. You must be able to rely on the information and advertising promises made by the manufacturer.

A “” good “” model from an older review

In the current test, no box spring bed is recommended all around. The only model that has been rated “” good “” by Stiftung Warentest so far was the “” Musterring Evolution “” from an earlier study. It costs 2480 euros and is still available in stores.

The range of vegetarian and vegan products in the supermarket is growing and growing. But there is a lack of uniform markings and seals. Anyone who goes shopping as a vegetarian or vegan needs good eyesight, because the following applies: Study the list of ingredients. But even here not every animal product is listed.

A jumble of labels

A yellow dot with a large “V” “here,” Veggie “” there “, a green” “vegan +” “on the shelf there, a” “meat-free” “underneath and a” “vegan flower” “next to it. German shops are currently teeming with vegetarian and vegan food – with a jumble of labels and descriptions. Because there is no state seal, associations, manufacturers and supermarkets all create their own symbols.

“” ‘Veggie’, for example, doesn’t mean anything to me, it can be vegetarian or vegan, “says Nadeschda Schmitt. The 32-year-old stands in a supermarket in the Rhine-Hessian wine village of Flonheim and studies the list of ingredients for the finished product on the refrigerated shelf. “” Locust bean gum, that’s okay. Wheat protein isn’t a problem either. Magnesium chloride – I don’t know exactly what it is. “” But since she sees a label that she trusts, the package ends up in the basket.

The terms vegan and vegetarian are not defined under food law

The vegan knows that there are no transparent state controls for the seal – which the consumer advice centers also criticize. Even more: the terms vegan and vegetarian are currently not even defined under food law. There is a decision by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) that vegan products cannot be called “” plant cheese “” or “” tofu butter “”. The same applies only to milk and not to meat products – which is why “” vegetarian hamburger “” is still on the shelf.

After all, it should soon be clear what vegetarian and vegan mean. The independent German Food Book Commission is currently working on a corresponding guiding principle, explains the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. The definition is not as easy as it seems at first glance. What about apples with beeswax coated on their skin? How do you rate wines that have been clarified using a fish bubble? And the red dye in wine gum, which comes from ground lice?

Consumers want easy labeling

“” I’m not that strict with myself, “says Schmitt. But when she is shopping for her vegan winegrowers hotel Trautwein, it is important to her that she does not accidentally put anything on the guests. Schmitt is in favor of a uniform seal, similar to the EU organic seal. “” It would be good to have a single label that is really checked and does not cost the manufacturer anything. “” In India, for example, where the majority of people are vegetarian, a red dot indicates ingredients from animals. A green dot means that it is a vegetarian product.

The currently leading label in Germany is the V-Label of the European Vegetarian Union (EVU). Around 4,000 products in the country are awarded with it. The label, which has been awarded since 1996, only exists if no genetically modified products and no caged eggs are used – which are stipulations of the EVU. These requirements are not to be found, for example, in the list of consumer protection ministers of the countries that have made a proposal for the definition of vegan and vegetarian.

Consumers prefer to buy vegetarian and vegan products with a seal

A spokeswoman for the Vegetarian Union explains that surveys consistently show that consumers would rather buy products with a seal than those without. The topic is growing in importance as the number of non-meat eaters increases. The EVU estimates that around 2,000 vegetarians and 200 vegans are added every day. Together there are more than nine million people in Germany.

The supermarkets are reacting with an ever larger range – some of which is between all the other foods, some on their own shelves or at least their own corners. Customers wanted a label to help them get their bearings, explains Aldi Süd. Kaufland is also expanding the number of products with the V-Label “” steadily “”. Many markets have their own brands, such as Lidl with “” My Best Veggie “”.

Cafés and restaurants offer too few vegetarian and vegan alternatives

The offer is very different today than eleven years ago when she began to eat purely plant-based, says Michaela Hausdorf from Mainz. At that time she was still living in rural areas and there was – if at all – soy milk in a health food store 25 kilometers away, “” quite overpriced and not very convincing in terms of taste “”. Today there are milk-like products made from oats, almonds, cashews, spelled and others in almost every market. “” For me it feels like in a land of milk and honey these days. “”

“” Based on current findings “”: Diet recommendations changed Vegan nutrition for babies: Growing up without meat and milk – is that possible? Salt and Fat: Are Vegetarian Products Always Healthier?

Hausdorf says that anyone who deals with the various logos and reads the lists of ingredients will actually get along quickly. “After all, you know your products and don’t have to think about it every time.” “However, she would like more cafes and restaurants to offer vegan alternatives and label them as such. “” In the country there is practically no such thing. “”

The mattress also plays a role in ensuring a good night’s sleep. Stiftung Warentest has sent pocket spring mattresses to the laboratory for lying and stress tests. The results.

No pocket spring mattress is convincing across the board. This is the summary of the Stiftung Warentest on a current study (“” test “” – edition 3/2019). 21 mattresses measuring 90 by 200 centimeters were tested, seven of which were identical. The testers never gave the grade “” very good “”.

Pocket spring mattresses consist of a steel spring core. This is surrounded by cushioning materials such as cotton, horsehair or foam. Each spring is sewn into a pocket, which is connected to the others in such a way that only the loaded springs give way and thus a high point elasticity is achieved. This type of mattress is particularly suitable for people who get too warm quickly while sleeping. The open interior allows the air to circulate better through the mattress. That provides cooling.

Mattresses: The test winners at Stiftung Warentest

Four mattresses were “” good “”, the rest at least “” satisfactory “”. Test winners were

“” Hn8 Sleep Systems Dynamic TFK “” (average price: 189 euros) and “” MFO Classic “” (average price: 278 euros).

They both received a grade of 2.3. The “” MFO Classic “” scored well with all four model body types for back and side sleepers with good lying properties. In terms of handling and declaration, it was rated slightly worse. The “” Hn8 Dynamic “” is especially good for tall people without a stomach and small people with a wide pelvis. In the side position, however, it is not suitable for the other types of sleep, according to the testers.

This is the cheapest mattress with a “” good “” test result

The cheapest mattress rated “good” in the test is “” Springs and Foam Hilding Sweden Essentials “” (grade 2.5).
